Pest management covers a wide range of treatments for pests such as cockroaches, spiders, fleas, termites, bedbugs and everything in between, but having an effective treatment is key in getting rid of those pests from your home.
An effective treatment will have to be a combination of using the right products and placing the products in the right places. But one of the most important things is communication between the technician and the customer.
What to Expect from a Pest Control Treatment
Many customers think that once a house or unit has been sprayed by a pest control company there will no longer be any problems with pests of any kind. Well, nothing could be further from the truth. The term “Pest Control” is a term used with most, but it is probably an over statement because no pest controller can control pests. It’s impossible. What can be done is management of pests, so the term “Pest Management” is more accurate.
Once a property has been treated, you may see some dead pests around or you may not. This will depend on how severe the problem was in the first place. But the thing to remember is once the products have been put in place, it will help prevent any pests from wanting to harbour in that dwelling.
No matter how much spraying is done it will never get rid of pests for good. Pests such as spiders generally need to be hit directly to get rid of them. But once they have been removed, it then opens up a whole new area for other spiders to start making the same area home. So, it will soon become a dwelling for new spiders. Most pest management companies will only give a 3 month warranty on spiders, and this is for good reason. It’s almost impossible to stop other spiders from re-inhabiting an area again.
Ants are also pests that are extremely difficult to manage. To get rid of ants completely at home or the office is almost impossible. But with good treatment, they can be managed. A good inspection of the surrounding area is important. This will help in finding nests that may be nearby. Finding the nest is the best way to help prevent ants, but it won’t last for ever as there will always be more that will soon build another colony. Some may say to just drown them all with pesticide. Within the pest control industry, this is known as “Blanket Spraying.” However, this can have a big effect on the surrounding environment and some useful creatures. In some cases, it can do more harm than good. We need to look after the surrounding environment at the same time we are managing pests.
Cockroaches and Silverfish
Cockroaches and silverfish are both pests that are mainly found in homes. They need to be removed as soon as possible. Cockroaches carry disease and silverfish can damage personal belongings. Treatment is done by using three main products. The first is a liquid spray. This is applied to all the shirting boards around the home and kick boards around the kitchen area. It can also be applied to cupboard hinges. The other two products are gels and dusts. Both have very long residuals that will remain active throughout the year and prevent cockroaches from wanting to start a new colony behind kitchen cupboards or in the workings of fridges, etc. They are applied to hinges in the kitchens and under appliances. With any internal pest treatment, it is good practice to have the roof void treated at the same time. This will get rid of any pests that may be dwelling up there. All sorts of pests can harbour in roof voids, from cockroaches, silverfish, mites, bird lice, spiders, and ants.
One of the big problems we have with external spraying is the sun and rain. Both of these elements break down the products over a short amount of time. The UV rays from the sun will break them down in just a few months, and if we have heavy rain fall, this can wash away liquid sprays. The environment is also a key factor in the treatment of pests. So, each job is different and may require a different approach.
Understanding the Life Cycle and Harbouring Habits of Pests
With a good understanding of the life cycle and harbouring habits of the many different types of pests we have here in Australia, we have a better chance of managing them. This is why it’s important for a pest technician to be able to communicate well with their customers, so that the customer has a better understanding of what they should expect from their treatment.
Areas such as Brisbane, Ipswich, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast have the right weather for more kinds of pests compared to cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth. With Australia being so big and having so many different climates, each state or city has its own particular pest problem at different times of the year. But the one thing that remains important when it comes to pest control for all the states and cities is a good understanding of pests. This can only be achieved by using a professional pest management company.
