Brisbane Pest Control Services
Pest Control Warranty
The fundamentals to understand about a pest control service: Lots of people ask me over the phone how long is the warranty. In most cases, we can apply a 12 month warranty for most pests.
For the most part, a twelve month service warranty is what most companies will put on their service, but what does this mean to you the customer.
A warranty period will depend on a number of things. Firstly the condition of the premises being treated and its surroundings.
Cockroaches are the most common pest problem throughout Australia. In most cases, a 12 month warranty can easily be applied. But if the conditions of the premises are favourable to the harbouring habits and life cycle of cockroaches, then a twelve month warranty would have to be adjusted.
This means that a “service warranty” would have to be applied, meaning that after a set time, determined by the pest technician a re-visit would have to take place.
Preparing the Property for Second Treatment
Before any re-visit it is usually advised that the premises be cleaned. This will allow the second treatment to be applied to a new environment, giving the ability to apply a twelve month warranty to the property.
Most people think that once a pest treatment has been carried out on their property – that they will never see another insect or pest again. This is not the case.
The idea behind having a pest treatment done is to keep out unwanted visitors. This will work to an extent, but there will always be some that will make their way back into a home. The products used are designed to have a long residual – this means they stay active for a long period of time.
This will mean that pests such as cockroaches will not want to harbour where these products are applied. This is why it is important to have the different products put in place by a professional pest technician that understand what the products do and the best places to apply them.
There is absolutely no point in applying an insecticide on the ceiling of a house to combat a cockroach or silverfish problem because these areas are not where they harbour. This is why areas such as kitchen kick boards and cupboards are treated for cockroaches, and stored cupboards in bedrooms and hallways are treated for pests such as silverfish.
Using Habits and Life Cycles of Common Pests to Choose Right Treatment
Having an understanding of the harbouring habits and life cycles of the many different pests found in Australia is the key to being able to successfully treat a property.
Spiders and ants are another common pest that people have trouble with. These are usually found on the outside of a home, but they can make their way inside. This is when it becomes a battle to try and get rid of them.
In most cases, spiders are happy outside as they will harbour in bushes and trees around the garden, and generally don’t cause any real problems for home owners. They will also catch and eat insects like mosquitoes, but some spiders like the huntsman do like to dwell inside our homes. This is when a treatment and advice from a pest control company is needed.
The treatment for spiders is usually an insecticide spray applied to areas where they are likely to be, such as in the corners or behind furniture. Another good way to keep spiders under control in your home is to use the vacuum cleaner to suck them up. This should be done on a regular basis, especially if a property is surrounded by bushes and trees or on acreage blocks.
A treatment for ants needs to be specifically applied to areas and tracks that ants are using to bring food back to their nest. Ants are hard workers and will stop at nothing to supply a constant food chain back to the nest to feed the queen and the young.
Applying a barrier spray around a house will not stop ants for good. The nest needs to be treated at the same time, but this can be a very difficult task as the nest could be metres away, or even in the next door neighbour’s garden, making it very difficult to control ants.
Ants would have to be the hardest pest to treat and guarantee for 12 months, as there can be thousands or millions in a colony, and their one aim is survival.
Main Pests for General Pest Control
The main pests, Cockroaches, Silverfish, Spiders and Ants, are the most commonly referred to pests when treating a house for general pest control. They pose the most problems for a pest technician, but with a little understanding and good advice from your local pest control company you should be able to gain an understanding of what you also need to do to help prevent them from using your home as restaurant and somewhere to stay.
Fleas are another pest that cause problems for customers now and then. Fleas are usually a summer pest as they need the right temperature to survive and breed.
This is where the term warranty can become confusing, when treating for flea infestations. The treatment will kill all the live fleas and their larvae, but it will not kill or remove any remaining flea eggs. Here is what needs to be done, before the treatment all the carpeted rooms and any wooden floors should be pre-vacuumed, then the insecticide is applied. After about 5 days, another pre-vacuum should be done. This will disturb the remaining flea eggs, and encourage then to hatch.
The fleas will then come in contact with the spray used by the pest controller and die. If after about 10 days you are still seeing fleas, then the company should come back free of charge and re-spray the area again. This is normal for a large infestation, so a second treatment may have to be carried out.
Once the treatment has worked, the warranty period is over. The treatment will not stop a re-infestation a few months later, and so this will then have to be treated as a new job.
For external flea treatments, it is recommended that all the lawns be mowed before any treatment is carried out. This again will encourage any flea eggs to hatch in time for when the treatment is done. This is the most effective way to control and remove fleas from inside and outside of homes.
Highlights of Pest Control Warranties
So just to re-cap on warranties, each warranty will have a different time scale, and this will depend solely on what is found at the premises being treated, and the type of pest being treated. It’s impossible for a pest control company to determine the length of a pest control guarantee over the phone.
This is why it’s important for a good and thorough inspection of the property before starting any treatment. The inspection will do a number of things. Firstly, it will tell the technician where or if there are any major problems, so these area can be treated with the appropriate products. Secondly, the technician will be able to work out what products will work best to rectify the problem.
Not all pests are treated in the same way. It is important for a pest technician to gain an understanding of the pests they are dealing with and where they harbour. Entry and exit points may need to be sealed to help prevent any further problems from occurring.
