Customer No. 1
We had a job booked in to steam clean a lounge room dining room and 1 bedroom on the Gold Coast. The rooms were in a 3 story unit block, so we could easily use the truck mounted machine to do the clean.
The customer had said to us when making the booking that the carpets were in very bad condition. This was caused by a bad tenant who hadn’t looked after the carpets very well at all. The customer wanted to see if a carpet clean would make a difference before going down the track of replacing them.
When we arrived, we assessed the carpets and they were in a bad way. I asked the customer if any other company had been in to clean the carpets. He told us they have never been cleaned; they were only 2.5 years old.
Once we knew they had not been cleaned before, we knew we could get them pretty much back to normal. So we set up and completed the job and they came up like new again. The customer was very happy and didn’t have to replace the carpets.
Customer No. 2
We also did another job that same day, but in Brisbane this time. The carpets there were in as bad a condition as the last job, but these carpets had been cleaned many times over the years and were in terrible condition.
The customer had said she has had some bad experiences with other carpet cleaning companies that hadn’t done a very good job.
We did a test on the carpet to identify the type of carpet we were cleaning and as it happens it was the same as the last job done at the Gold Coast. They were both a nylon made material, but this carpet wasn’t going to come up as good as the last one did and I’ll explain why.
Some may think, well, if you have the same type of carpet and they are both in pretty poor condition with spills and stains all over them and by using the same technician and machine and cleaning products that the clean should bring them both up as well as each other. Well, this isn’t the case.
The reason why the second job didn’t come up as well is because of all the previous cleans by other companies. All the different types of cleaning processes and cleaning solutions had destroyed the carpet over the years and, in some areas, stripped the colour out of the carpet completely.
The customer at the second job wasn’t expecting the carpet clean to perform miracles as she knew they were in a bad way, but she just wanted them as clean as could be and the dirt removed. She also wanted them sanitised, which we did, and she was very happy with that. But if this customer had used a reputable company from day one, the carpets would still be in good condition with little to no stains.
An Important Thing to Note with Carpet Stains
One major thing to keep in mind when having a clean done is that not every stain will be removed by any of the cleaning methods, whether it be a truck mounted system, a portable unit or a carpet dry clean. Sn some cases, a stain has discoloured the carpet fibres to a different colour. This should be explained at the start of the job by the technician.
One of the main problems with the second customer’s carpets was that other cleaners had used the wrong sort of cleaning solutions on the carpet, and also only ever did a spot clean. This is not how to correctly prepare a carpet for a steam or dry clean.
Carpets should firstly be pre-vacuumed and then a pre-spray shampoo solution applied to the whole carpet, not just the spot stains. It’s also important to have a machine with the power to fully extract all of the cleaning solutions back out of the carpet.
Leaving residual products in the carpet that aren’t meant to be left there will deteriorate the surface of the carpet over time and even start to dissolve the glue that holds the backing in place.
I have been into many homes and commercial premises over the last 18 years of cleaning carpets throughout Brisbane, Ipswich, Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast. Many of those carpets have been unnecessarily damaged by poor carpet cleans. This can be easily prevented by just not using a cheap and unqualified cleaning company.
You may be asking yourself, how do you know who is a good company and who is a bad company? Well, this is easily determined in today’s world and with the aid of the internet no one should get ripped off by a carpet cleaner.
All you have to do is a search online and if the price sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. So avoid those companies and maybe ask your family and friends who they recommend.
Here is a list of questions you should ask before hiring a carpet cleaning company:
- Does the price given include everything or are there extra’s.(if so don’t book)
- Do you pre-spray the whole carpet?
- Do you sanitise?
- Do you deodorise?
- Do you spot clean as you clean?
- (Very important) do you have a Guarantee?
- Do you use a truck mounted steam cleaning machine or a portable?
- Is it a steam clean or hot water extraction or a dry clean? (which one)
- Do you pre-vacuum?
- You ask the questions, it’s your money after all
A carpet cleaning quote should include everything from the shampoo to all the deodorisers and sanitisers and stain removal. If it doesn’t, it’s just a scam to get their foot in the door and up-sell. if this happens, ask the company to leave.
The only time an extra cost should happen is if the room sizes are a lot bigger than quoted. This is because it obviously takes the cleaner longer to complete the job.
A standard room size is 4×4 metres. Don’t accept anything less than this.
The whole point to this article is to educate people on the difference between a cheap carpet clean and a more expensive one.
The cheap clean will do nothing more than eventually ruin your carpet because the cleaning solutions aren’t properly used and extracted. The technicians that are doing these cheap jobs aren’t trained in any way and have no idea of how to correctly clean carpets or what sort of solutions to use.
If you use a professional carpet cleaner with a good reputation, your carpets will last for as long as they were intended.
