Many people ask me what is the difference between a Truck Mounted machine and a Portable Machine, so I thought I would try and shed some light on this.

The Portable

The portable machine is taken out of the van and put inside the premises to be cleaned, then  your hot water (at around 40-50° C) and your electricity is used to do the clean.

The length of the hose on the portable machine is around 7-10 metres, so the machine has to be pulled around the job site.

The portable machine consists of two chambers, a waste tank and a clean water tank, which are separated by a fibreglass wall. Clean water and cleaners are infused into the carpet and then sucked out as soiled water into the waste tank.

The primary problem with the portable machine is that it doesn't have the power to effectively carry out a deep steam clean.

The measure of the effectiveness of the cleaning process is how efficiently the machine removes soiled water from the carpet, and this is dependent on the “flow” of air producing suction in the waste pipe.
A portable machine typically uses two 3-stage Lamb electric motors, each of which produce about 95 CFM (cubic feet per minute) of air flow through the waste pipe. A total effective optimum airflow of 190 CFM.

When the electric motors are working and under stress, they slow down and drop below the optimum flow rate. This reduces the suction in the waste pipe and leaves the carpet or upholstery wet for longer. This can be a bad thing when cleaning Berber carpets because of the browning effect (see our separate article on the browning effect under ‘Cleaning’).

The obvious advantage of a portable machine is that it is indeed portable, and can be carried to the higher floors of high-rise buildings.
This is the only time Best 1 uses portable machines; and to ensure the best results we pre-spray your carpets and then run a spinning pad over them to agitate the carpet fibres and loosen the dirt before using the portable machine.

The Truck Mount

The Truck Mount is a much more sophisticated cleaning system.

The primary components are a petrol motor, driving a pump and a blower, and a heat exchanger.

The 23hp Kohler petrol motor is connected, via pulleys and belts, to the pump to provide water pressure and to the blower to provide suction. The heat exchanger is a water jacket mounted around the exhaust pipe of the petrol motor.

The pump can produce pressures up to 3000 psi (compared to 300 psi for the portable units) and is used to inject high temperature steam into carpets or upholstery. The pressure is controlled at a lower level when cleaning carpets or upholstery, but is used at the high levels to clean Tiles, Grout, Concrete or Stone.

The blower can produce upwards of 400 CFM (cubic feet per minute) of airflow through the waste pipe (more than double the suction of the portable units).
The machine is so powerful that we have to use a Teflon glide on the bottom of the cleaning ‘wand’ head to stop it sticking to the carpet. More than twice the suction, so more than twice the amount of dirty water is extracted compared to the portable units.

The heat exchanger can produce hot water at 150° C (compared to 40-50° C for the portable units) and it is this heat that Best 1 rely on to achieve the high standard of cleaning that we always deliver.

The “Steam Clean” Debate
The Portable vs. Truck Mount debate comes up a lot over the word "Steam Clean".

A portable can never be classed as a steam cleaning machine. It is, in fact, a hot water extraction machine, as it cannot reach the temperatures necessary to produce steam.

It is possible to get an electric heater box that will attach to the portable machine to increase the water temperature, but it is inefficient and can't keep up with the water flow through the pump.

The only true steam clean is provided by a Truck Mounted steam cleaning machine. This is because the heat exchanger easily maintains the high temperature necessary to produce steam.

Looking after our Investment and your Cleaning

We change the oil and filters on the main motor every 100 hours, and the main filter in the waste tank is cleaned daily to maintain optimum suction.
We do this to ensure that our Truck Mount machines are always in top condition.
