The most common mistake I see people make with their lounge suites is they don’t vacuum them enough, it’s important to vacuum lounge suites every 4-6 weeks this helps to remove the dust particulates, it’s these small amounts of dust that will wear the upholstery and discolour it over time. When using a vacuum cleaner on seats or upholstery you should put on the attachment with the brush, this way you are grooming the fabric at the same time as vacuuming, and you may even be able to remove some small marks using this method.
There are lots of different fabrics on the market today, the most popular material at the moment is micro fibre or micro suede they clean up very well but still require regular vacuuming. They also have a good resistance to staining, but still require a steam clean every 12 months, if the seats are subject to heavy traffic from kids then a steam clean every 6 months would be best. The reason it’s so important to have your sofas steam cleaned on a regular basis is they can hold a lot of bacteria, this bacteria can be the sweat from your body, this is more noticeable on the arm rests and head rests of the seats, over time the sweat from your body can permanently stain the fabric making it almost impossible to remove, so some darkening of these areas may occur. When the right care and attention is given to your upholstery you can expect a longer life span of the material and have it looking better for longer.
The other important thing to remember is with sofa bed lounge suites to ensure you vacuum the mattress part regularly this is often forgotten about because it’s close up out of sight, remember cockroaches, bed bugs and other insects will feed of the dead skin left in a sofa bed mattress, it’s best even to take the mattress outside for a few hours on a sunny day and allow to air.
